Owning a pet comes with significant responsibilities as children learn to take on tasks and understand the animal's needs. Piper's Pet Pursuit by Cortney Cino is the perfect story to address this issue. Piper is an adorable and energetic little girl who asks her parents every morning to let her have a pet. However, they answer that she's not ready. This situation discourages her a bit because she often sees other children with their pets. Despite this, Piper remains optimistic and is kind to every animal that comes to her house, making it feel welcome. From squirrels to insects like ants or mosquitoes, Piper cares for all, demonstrating her deep empathy. Her parents reevaluate their position on having a pet when they notice Piper's love and interest in all living beings.
I loved Cortney Cino's writing. The narrative is charming, with simple and direct sentences, ideal for children who are beginning to read. The story is entertaining and educational because it shows the perspective of Piper and her parents facing various situations. Cortney addresses multiple values, especially perseverance. I liked Piper because she is a sweet and optimistic little girl. She solves unexpected situations with creativity to ensure the comfort of all the animals that come into her home. She encourages sensitivity and highlights the importance of the companionship a pet can provide. In addition, the illustrations are charming, with warm colors and settings that reinforce the love and attention Piper offers without discrimination of species. Piper's Pet Pursuit will teach young readers about caring for the environment and respecting living beings.
