Maxine Rose Schur’s fascinating travelogue, Places in Time: Reflections on a Journey, includes humorous accounts of her experiences in Mexico, Europe, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. Growing up in San Francisco close to the ocean made Schur want to explore beyond her homeland and travel to unknown places. Her father also inspired her dream. As a newlywed bride, she ventured into Mexico with her husband, Stephen, in 1971. They had made a pact and would first travel to Mexico and Europe as Schur wanted. Later, they would travel to Asia and live in New Zealand according to Stephen’s wishes. Their eventful journey begins with a thrilling rodeo in Durango, Mexico. It will take them to places and people that will forever change their lives, from hitchhiking on a ship to camping in Paris and traveling through Australia.
This is an enthralling account with many interesting characters, funny observations, and hilarious events. I loved how the descriptions of each scene and character included are precise, including enough detail to adequately paint each scene and describe the people they meet along the way. I enjoyed the humorous accounts and was moved by the kindness and hospitality of those they met. Schur’s observations are perceptive and insightful, and I gleaned important lessons about travel, pursuing dreams, and human interaction. Places in Time by Maxine Rose Schur is an adventure-filled, captivating work that documents a couple’s intriguing experiences during their journeys across various countries and continents. Fans will love its delightful characters, riveting scenes, and informative content.
