Plate: Dead World Apocalypse by Thomas Walters is an epic tale of adventure, love, loss, and hope. After civilization crumbles due to a widespread powerful electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attack, Tom Thornton, also known as Plate, is forced to journey to find his wife, Maggie. His expedition into the apocalyptic world is further complicated by his amnesia, possibly onset by the EMP frying the metal plate in his head. Maggie had left home a couple of weeks before the world-changing event to be with her frail old mother, Gloria. Plate encounters both friends and foes on his way to reunite with his wife but not everyone is who they seem to be. Fortunately, his dog, Topo, and his horse, Bobby, are his loyal companions.

I thoroughly enjoyed Plate by Thomas Walters. The apocalyptic setting was vividly portrayed. I appreciated how the cause of the devastation was briefly discussed but not dwelled upon. Walter’s work is heavily character-driven. I was emotionally invested in each character. My favorite character, Clevis, Gloria’s caretaker, remained an optimistic, helpful soul despite his depressing backstory. Another character that stood out was Renfroe Reese, a talkative fellow who traveled with Plate for a significant portion of his journey. The story was excellently paced. The plot twists were genuinely surprising. I was excited to see what would happen next. Walter did an awesome job portraying the themes of identity, survival, hope, death, and perseverance through adversity. I highly recommend Plate to everyone who loves adventure and post-apocalyptic novels.
