In James Dunlop’s Plausible in Parts, Andy MacKay returns to his Camden flat after a contract mission in Kosovo that involved an attempt on General Marku Berisha, expecting to resume his routine, but the police arrest him and link the case to his actions abroad. When the charges collapse, attention shifts to his solicitor, Kate Lawrence, who vanishes after working on a case of missing women moved through Eastern Europe. Andy follows her trail to Minsk, where he uncovers a network controlled by oligarch Leanid Antonavich, whose operations rely on secrecy, intimidation, and the cross-border movements of victims. As Andy searches for Kate, pressure increases when Kate’s daughter, Vicky, is taken, pushing him into a direct pursuit that crosses jurisdictions and pits him against organized forces determined to stop him.

James Dunlop’s Plausible in Parts is fast-paced and full of heart-thumping action, ticking the boxes for me, as a lover of all things suspenseful. Andy is really likable, and a lead we are comfortable rooting for, but the women who work alongside him are the most fascinating. I loved the character Lydia Karskaja, a Minsk-based lawyer who worked with Kate on cross-border cases. She's sharp and strong, taking Andy to meet advocates who run a shelter for women who have escaped exploitation. This is one of the most heartbreaking parts of the novel, where their testimony and physical evidence connect the legal work to lived experiences. The settings are amazing, from a luxury George V suite in Paris, where glass walls overlook the city, to a private yacht off the St. Tropez coast, where narrow decks and dark water shape every step taken on board. Well written and spectacularly plotted, this is a novel worth every moment spent on the page. Very highly recommended.
