Posie Pixie and the Lost Matchbox by Sarah Hill is an enchanting, Beatrix Potter-esque flight of fancy for children, wherein Posie the Pixie goes on a quest with her friend Wibble the woodlouse to trade in her bed of lime leaves for something more comfortable. Along the way, she learns about the importance and purpose of recycling, the value of real friendship, and the rewards of good, old-fashioned hard work. Posie Pixie and the Lost Matchbox is cleverly written in easy-to-understand words that young children will easily recognize and be able to read independently. In addition, the text is accompanied by delightful color plates from illustrator Sarah Mauchline, whose imaginative and whimsical style is a perfect match for Hill’s beguiling narrative.
Posie Pixie’s woodland world is full of wonder, uplifted by positive values, free from discrimination and hatred, powered by teamwork, and ripe with possibilities - in short, a perfect model for young children to enjoy and emulate. The charming text and appealing illustrations provide many details to invite discussion and inspired playtime for children and adults alike.
Posie and her friends are timeless characters in the fashion of Potter, Milne, and White. With proper exposure, over time Sarah Hill’s Whimsy Wood series (in which Posie Pixie and the Lost Matchbox is the second volume) could well find its place in the lexicon of classic children’s Literature. Parents: turn off the TV, unplug the computer, power down the X-box and settle in with your child for a shared reading of Sarah Hill’s Posie Pixie and the Lost Matchbox. It may well be the springboard for a lifetime of imaginative problem-solving, independent thinking, and empowerment.
