Young readers are invited to move their bodies while lifting their hearts to God in Praise and Play to Start the Day by Christine L. Henderson. Each of the exercises is paired with a rhyming line of thanks that turns everyday movements like running in place, stretching, or balancing on one foot into little moments of gratitude. The book covers twelve quick exercise-and-praise sets, keeping things light, enjoyable, and easy to follow. At the end of this book, there’s a search-and-find section (like find all the circles) along with coloring pages. Each shows the theme of thankfulness and play. It reflects Frederick Buechner’s idea that “faith is better caught than taught,” because children connect with God through joyful experiences, and this title certainly embraces that message.

I found myself smiling throughout Praise and Play to Start the Day by Christine L. Henderson. It naturally weaves together faith, movement, and fun. As an educator, I believe it can be used independently or for a whole group. It could be an effective way for kids to expend energy before discussing topics such as which activity is their favorite, how they connect with God, or making a list of alternative movements. It could also be extended by coloring some pages at the end of the book, completing one of the find-a-picture sheets, or having students draw themselves doing one of the movements. The cheerful illustrations bring each action to life and give youngsters lots to look at and talk about. Teachers or faith-based educators who need an interactive spiritual picture book will appreciate this resource. It’s a flexible, joyful tool that is sure to get children growing closer to God in an engaging way.
