Cain's Chameleon by Mark G. Bearss takes place in West Michigan during the early 1940s and follows working-class families as they try to make it through difficult times. Earl “Tuck” Porter is a talented stone mason who isn’t really sure what he wants to do with his life. His cousin and boss, Dan Driscoll, becomes caught up in sports gambling and falls into serious debt. As the pressure grows, Dan begins making very dangerous decisions. At the same time, Stan Neumann works hard at a factory and saves money by hiding coins in jars around his property. When Dan finds out about Stan’s savings, he comes up with a plan to take the money and drags Tuck into it. As money troubles and poor choices collide, their lives begin to go downhill in ways they never expected. How far will these men go to get away from all the pressure building up around them?
Cain's Chameleon by Mark G. Bearss is a historical novel that shows regular people struggling to make tough decisions during a stressful time in American history. I loved how the story focused on everyday life, work, and family struggles instead of grand, heavily action-packed events. The writing is engaging, and the author takes sufficient time to show how seemingly "simple" decisions can slowly lead to bigger challenges if not handled with a pinch of wisdom. I found myself thinking about how stress and fear can push people into actions they never planned to take. The different characters each bring their own problems and values into the story, which makes the situations seem more believable. Overall, this story reveals how ordinary people can be caught in extraordinary circumstances and how every decision is crucial. If you're a fan of Betty Smith's A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, you'll love this book.
