Precious has been raised with good values and, despite being poor by many standards, her Christian parents have raised her well. Never pretty as a child, this all changes as Precious nears puberty and she quite literally becomes a stunner. Beauty, we know, tends to attract attention and this can come in many forms. Sadly a day comes when she gives in to the charms of Emery Johnson, who literally sweeps her off her small-town feet and takes her away from home. Her new life is lavish. Living in New York is far different to her hometown, Mayhem, North Carolina; the downside is that she no longer sees her family, or her friends. Emery sees to that.
He becomes her worst nightmare with his manipulative jealousy, and she is devastated when his behaviour turns to violence. One day he vanishes, leaving her afraid for what might come next. Rejection and brutality can make even the most mild-mannered person into someone who can deal you a fate worse than death. Time passes and one-time nurse Precious returns to school. She outstrips all her peers and, amazingly, becomes a doctor. She becomes a prestigious doctor with revenge in her heart.
Precious Retribution by Steven Spellman is a definite page-turner. The story begins beautifully, following Precious’ life in the small farming community. Her love of family and friends is obvious. The treatment meted out to her by Emery forges a spirit of hatred within her, and she vows to use her medical skills to avenge her aching heart. She has lost her parents, but will not lose her self-esteem. As the book proceeds, her goal becomes obvious and is definitely not for the faint-hearted. Her retaliation takes the form of sadistic, brutal torture, as she ensures that this man – who ruined her life – will never ruin the life of another woman. Strong, graphic content.
