Princess and the Hummingbird by David Cropp tells the story of Princess, a curious and graceful kitten who loves to watch the world from her window. Out in the yard, the flowers bicker constantly because each one wants to be Princess’s favorite. Princess, without anyone realizing, can't stop watching Hummingbird darting from flower to flower. She is fascinated. Before long, they become good friends, and Princess asks that Hummingbird visit new places and share the stories of her experiences. One day, Hummingbird does not return. This makes Princess feel worried about her friend, and she leaves her home to look for Hummingbird. Princess has no choice; she needs to be brave, make new friends, and push through her fears if she’s going to find Hummingbird, finish her mission, and make it back home.
Princess and the Hummingbird isn’t just a children’s adventure; it also has life lessons. Humility, friendship, patience, honesty, courage, and gratitude are all here. As Princess heads out on her journey, she grows, figures out who she really is, and learns how to value what’s already in her life. David Cropp really brings her character to life as the narrator, and the cover art by Barbara Hodges captures both Princess and Hummingbird beautifully. The rest of the cast matters, too. Every character has their own spark, and you see their personalities shine. Even the plants—Rosebush, Azalea, and Dogwood—go through their own change. They start off squabbling about who’s the most beautiful, but later on, they learn to respect each other and start tossing out compliments instead. Their bickering is hilarious, and kids will love picking up little facts about each flower as they get to know them all. In the end, this story nails the balance: stay curious, but patient. Stay humble, but confident. And sure, be independent, but don’t be afraid to lean on your friends. Overall, this is a great read with amazing lessons about growing up.
