An ancient secret society is behind an advanced scientific technological corporation and pulling strings that entangle a doctor and a young woman in human experiments that could change the dynamics of civilization, in the mind-boggling novel Project Evelyn by J.C. Lahoe. When a drunk driver crosses traffic and kills her family, Evelyn loses her arm. Not expecting her to live, a robotic corporation swoops in and erases her presence from the hospital's records. Abducting Evelyn and conveying her to their facility, Dr. Tim Ezrick performs a surgical procedure and attaches a mechanical arm to her shoulder. Evelyn unexpectedly survives, and Tim takes a personal interest in her. As the days, weeks, and months pass, Evelyn starts assisting Tim with his experiments and becomes a part of the center. Tim's superior, Dr. Shepard, following protocols and directives from an elite group hidden behind centuries of closed doors, begins pushing for live human experimental subjects. Feeling expendable, Tim and Evelyn are confronted with a moral dilemma if they want to stay alive. What choices do they have? Can Evelyn and Tim survive what is to come?

Project Evelyn by J.C. Lahoe is a spine-tingling science fiction thriller. It is an exciting and mind-bending story that had me on the edge of my seat from the first page until the last. The intricacies of the storyline are so diverse and captivating that I was completely immersed in the story and couldn't put the book down. The plot flows at a brisk pace, building a compelling story arc to subsequently reach an electrifying conclusion. It is an impactful and eye-opening tale when taking into consideration how the medical and robotic technology portrayed is not so far-fetched as it once was. With the elements of drama and suspense combined with the antagonists' deviant intent and advanced technological aspect of the book, the author has created a riveting novel that will entertain and delight science fiction fans from young adults on up.

Sixteen-year-old Evelyn is involved in a car accident and is almost killed as a result. Luckily for her, she is saved from death but is left handicapped and at the mercy of a medical robotics research facility. She soon learns that she may have to compromise her values and recruit some homeless people for the research facility in exchange for getting back at the man who hit her car and ruined her life. However, a super-talented surgeon and friend at the research facility warns her of her association with the ruthless CEO of the facility as the cost may be more than what it appears to be. Will Evelyn find a way to escape her proverbial deal with the devil? If you like futuristic sci-fi that explores artificial intelligence, brain transplantation, and cyborgs, you will enjoy Project Evelyn by J.C. Lahoe.

Project Evelyn juxtaposes different things that could exist in the future and their benefits and demerits while immersing readers in a preparatory and aware state of mind. I felt a little envious of the characters and how they interact with technology, especially because the futuristic and fictional scenarios are depicted in a realistic and natural manner. J.C. Lahoe strongly projects a battle between good and evil in terms of morals and belief in a Christian God or lack thereof, making it more suitable for readers who are Christians or neutral about religion. The major themes explored include homelessness, drug addiction, war, murder, jealousy, vengeance, and conspiracy theories. I was pleasantly thrilled by the innovation displayed in this gripping, fast-paced science fiction story, and I totally recommend it!

Project Evelyn by J.C. Lahoe is a dystopian sci-fi thriller set in a world where computer interface merges with human biology. Losing her parents, her arm, and half of her face after a car accident, sixteen-year-old Evelyn wakes up from a coma to find herself within the confines of Three Deuce Robotics, a government research facility. They did not expect her to survive after the experiment, but Evelyn is a fighter and a chance as a successful long-term prospect. Dr. Shepard, who is at the helm of TDR, has a government contract that needs to be fulfilled, and Evelyn finds herself as an experiment and must contend with difficult moral choices to survive that include recruiting the homeless for human experiments. Lost, isolated, and a prisoner of Dr. Shepard, she will come to realize that certain retribution must follow.

Readers are not likely to be disappointed in Project Evelyn as the first book in a trilogy. Lahoe explores the reality of a destitute existence and tries to make it better by making men play God under the power of technology. A heavy burden is immediately placed on Evelyn’s shoulders, having been made aware of the deaths of the homeless people she recommended for the experiments and for betraying their trust. It gives some truly surprising twists and turns to see how the dog bites the hand that feeds it. The A.I. characters and dystopian setting make this truly a cross between The Hunger Games and The Terminator. A gripping and emotional young adult novel, it is entertaining and thought-provoking enough to make you anticipate the next volume.

Project Evelyn is a contemporary science fiction thriller by author J. C. Lahoe. Evelyn, a young girl of 16, finds herself awakening at one of the facilities of Three Deuce Robotics, a secret organization experimenting with futuristic A.I. technology on humans. Evelyn is traumatized to learn that the accident that she has been in killed her parents and left her physically handicapped. But a doctor named Tim Ezrick shows her compassion and fits her with a futuristic prosthetic arm. He also takes her under his wing and gives her lessons in biomechanics. However, Tim's boss Shepard and his superiors have different plans for Evelyn and the other subjects. Will Evelyn find her freedom? Will Tim be able to avoid a global catastrophe?

Project Evelyn showcases the detrimental effects of technology and how any newly discovered technology can get weaponized. Lahoe's narrative deftly conveys the disastrous consequences of an over-reliance on technology and how it gets used by global corporations to satisfy their greed. All the characters in Project Evelyn feel fresh and distinct, and Lahoe portrays them realistically. I was especially impressed by the General and Dr. Shepard. While the General is a complex character with varying shades of grey, Dr. Shepard is a villainous personality with morals solely driven by money. The plot moves at a breakneck pace with various twists and turns along the way. I honestly had no idea where it would end up until the last few pages. I would highly recommend this to fans of science fiction.

Project Evelyn by J.C. Lahoe is a science fiction novel that caters to readers of all ages. Evelyn had no idea how it happened, but suddenly she was in a car accident in which her arm was crushed and her face was disfigured. Severely damaged by the accident, there was no chance for her to survive. However, 16-year-old Evelyn became government property and was pieced back together by the United States Advanced Research Projects Agency. Now, she had a very strange job in which she had to bring in more people to the department for the “good of mankind.” Her conscience was screaming at her, but she had no choice, especially if she wanted to survive. Was she really out of choices? Was there something that was kept hidden from her? The road ahead was hard, but was Evelyn prepared to face a dilemma that would change her as a person?

This is a gritty and gory novel, one that will make readers hold their breath and wait for what is coming next. Evelyn drove the story forward and made the plot interesting for me. She was conflicted, hesitant, yet driven by survival. She made decisions that she regretted and her conscience proved to be her one true guidance to salvation. I enjoyed the dialogues between the antagonist characters (yes, characters); they were vicious, and their intentions were made clear from the get-go. However, I had no time to feel sorry for Evelyn because the action was relentless. The background building was great. I got the opportunity to understand Evelyn and anticipate what would happen next. I hope the author releases the sequel soon because the ending keeps me up at night.
