Project Obedience is the first novel in the Project Series by A. R. Stein. This young adult fantasy follows the life of young Christian Hoyt, who was a ward of the state and lived in foster care all his life. The moment he turned 18, Christian was thrown out of his foster home and was expected to become an adult. What was supposed to be his freedom turned out to be a struggle. With this came a big change in his life, as Christian showed abilities that baffled him. Before he knew it, he was under the control of Dr. Rodriguez who had some sinister plans for him. Although under the thumb of this madman, Christian was not willing to take part in any evil. What could Christian do on his own and was there even a way for him to fight against this situation and stay free?
Project Obedience brought up so many emotions for me. I was sad and a little angry as the story continued. Christian was anything but a coward, and his determination lured me into reading this story until the end in a single sitting. The prologue surprised me, as I was not expecting the story to open with such a dramatic scene. A. R. Stein made sure this page-turner had action, suspense, drama, and a little bit of angst to excite readers and make them stay until the end. I loved Christian’s progress. He started by being helpless, but as the story progressed, he turned into a determined and powerful man ready to fight for what he believed in. The paranormal aspect of the story was exciting without being clichéd. There is nothing predictable about this story as every chapter introduces a new turn and creates more opportunities for Christian to be the hero he deserves to be. I cannot wait for the next novel in the series!
