If you are looking to improve your public speaking and presentation abilities, one of the most complete and practical guides is Public Speaking Essentials You Always Wanted to Know by Ami Ved. Written by a professional coach and corporate trainer, the book breaks down important skills for both novice and experienced speakers. The book starts with one of the most basic concepts, building confidence and overcoming the fear of public speaking, an experience shared by 72-75% of the population, and explains the difference between public speaking and conversation. It then covers many of the important aspects of public speaking, including structuring your speech, effective storytelling, using visual aids and jaw-dropping moments to make your speech memorable, effective delivery, effective use of your voice, the importance of gestures and body language, and building a strong conclusion.
The book is written as if the author is coaching us individually to become more effective speakers. The author illustrates the principles throughout with stories and examples from her own life as well. In addition to the basics of public speaking, the author talks about effective presentations through varied settings, including interactive presentations. The author covered the material very well, providing some excellent ideas to improve speech as well. The closing chapter on how she started as a beginning Toastmaster, moving to a seasoned presentation professional, was very inspiring. Toastmasters Clubs (which are worldwide) are excellent for putting the ideas to use and developing your presentation and leadership skills. Public Speaking Essentials You Always Wanted to Know by Ami Ved reminds us that our voices are waiting to be heard by others. Using the many valuable principles and techniques in the book, those messages can become memorable. An excellent practical book on public speaking and presentations. Highly recommended!
