Children's picture books allow young readers to develop a better understanding of the world. They help children relate new words to images, simplifying the understanding of complex ideas. To guide us in the process of selecting the right images, Terrie Sizemore presents Putting the Pictures in Picture Books. She explains different styles of illustration and what characteristics to consider so that they suit the type of story and the interests of young readers. She then describes the role of storyboards and the key aspects for effective communication between the author and the illustrator. Finally, she details what to analyze to create a book that provides benefits such as inspiration and support for children's emotional and social development.
Terrie Sizemore brings her experience of working with authors and illustrators, sharing it with us in a unique way. I loved how she describes the entire process, from formulating the idea to completing the book. She expresses herself with simplicity and clarity, always offering helpful advice. She includes numerous examples and illustrations. We can see various image styles with charming designs and eye-catching color combinations, including explanations of why each detail was chosen. She also shares sketches, samples, and corrections so we can learn how to create quality content. My favorite part is where she talks about the communication between the author and the illustrator. There, she shows examples of real design changes and explains why they were made. I also appreciated the excerpts from different books, which explain how to develop a narrative suited to the subject. Putting the Pictures in Picture Books is an excellent guide for authors who want to create new content and illustrators looking for inspiration.
