After a near brush with death at the hands of an assailant they barely know, Nashville PI Ethan and his wife, Michelle ‘Mickey’ Jenks, are left shaken and with a ton of questions. The assailant, later identified as D. J. Burnett, had demanded that the couple tell him about Kirby Shepherd, whom they also knew nothing about, before trying to throw them off a cliff. Who is Kirby Shepherd? The couple is about to find out. But first, Mickey must go undercover on an investigation that takes her across state lines to a small-town bar in Kentucky, where the answers she seeks lie, and so does danger. Unknown to her, Ethan has secretly followed her. Is the couple ready for the dark family secrets, conspiracies, and violence that await them in Gentry? Find out in Linda Opdyke’s The Stillness of Murder.

Linda Opdyke’s The Stillness of Murder is a must-read for lovers of mystery sleuth novels. With a dramatic introduction, Opdyke sets the stage for an intriguing high-stakes plot wrapped in a web of mystery, once again featuring the savvy, methodical investigator Ethan. The edge-of-the-seat suspense and jaw-dropping plot twists drew me in, hooked me, and dared me to look away until the final word. The balanced attention to detail and the evocative depictions brought the towns in Kentucky and Tennessee to life on the pages. It felt like I was next to Ethan and Mickey, experiencing the tension, hostility, and indifference around them as they followed the trail of clues from Nashville to Gentry and Morgan’s Ridge. The purposeful and sharp conversations gave me insight into the cast’s emotions and their complex traits. This made it easy to connect with them. This page-turner is an incredible fourth installment in the Take it to the Limit Series, and a standalone read.

Take it to the Limit: The Stillness of Murder by Linda Opdyke is a well-written novel that follows Ethan, a private investigator, and his wife, Mickey, as they face danger, secrets, and revenge. It starts with a scene where they are attacked by a man, D.J. Burnett, at a remote cabin. This confrontation leads to a fight where Ethan throws Burnett off a cliff to save Mickey. Later on, Mickey meets Lonnie, Burnett's nephew, who convinces her to visit Gentry, Kentucky, to investigate his father’s suicide. To get at the truth, Mickey goes undercover at the seedy White Dog Bar, where she faces daily threats, intimidation, and close calls with Boomer—the boss at the White Dog Bar—and his violent crew. Ethan and his team, Bowen, Logan, and Tanner, begin to investigate and piece together their connections with Hannah, Lonnie, and the Burnett family, leading to bigger conspiracies and shocking turns of events.

This book is a great read. It combines action and suspense with the emotional weight of the characters. I loved how the characters were well-developed and relatable. Both the protagonists and the antagonist have their own motivations and personal experiences that drive their actions; this made the book even more grounded and easy to follow. One of my favorite characters is Mickey; her bravery and relentless nature gave her a place in my heart, especially during the time she was so afraid and tired. This book is fast-paced and detailed. It is not just about danger and actions; it is also about family ties, love, and painful secrets. Ethan is another standout character. His protective nature sometimes clashed with Mickey's independence, which made their bond feel so authentic, with both lovely and conflicting moments. The Stillness of Murder by Linda Opdyke covers themes of family, revenge, and the search for truth, and I recommend it to readers who enjoy suspense and mystery novels with complex family secrets and action.
