Quick Brown Fox and a Lazy Big Dog: The Fox Shall Hop! by Sawyer Ique begins with a lazy dog who decides to take a long nap outside after playing with his ball. While he sleeps on the ground, he doesn't realize that a small fox has set the goal of jumping over the big dog. The fox tries to make it over the dog, but he cannot jump far enough. The fox is not willing to give up. Every time the dog takes his nap outside, the fox continues to try to jump over him. He soon loses confidence when he cannot do it. As the seasons pass, the fox gradually regains his confidence and gives it one last go, especially now that he is much bigger. Will he succeed in jumping over the big lazy dog?
Sawyer Ique has written an entertaining story with Quick Brown Fox and A Lazy Big Dog: The Fox Shall Hop! It shows children that perseverance pays off and that with practice, we can achieve our goals. Even when you fail, you have to keep trying. The illustrations are not very detailed, but they are cute and help to tell the story. The author has a way of conveying a powerful message with very few words. I think it would appeal to younger children in the 3-5 age range. Learning new skills can be scary, but this book shows them that when you put your mind to it, you can do anything. It is a fun read and I would recommend it.
