Quito and the Galápagos: A Bucket List Adventure by Adelia E. Ritchie is a well-written book that offers a detailed account of Ritchie’s journey through Ecuador’s capital, Quito, and the remote Galápagos Islands. Ritchie's unexpected journey to the Galápagos Islands was made possible during a dinner with a friend. She begins by describing her arrival in Quito and the historical background about Quito’s origin. She includes some local traditions she had never experienced in other places. This book also features amazing landmarks, architectural sites, and attractions she encountered during her journey. Other intriguing places include San Cristóbal Island, Puerto Ayora, Santa Cruz, Isabela Island, and more. The animals are not left out, as Ritchie wrote interesting details about them.
I have never been part of a journey just by reading about it, the way I felt reading this book. I was completely engrossed by the enchanting pictures and historical facts about the places featured. All this proves Ritchie to be an exceptional storyteller and a skilled writer. I loved the pictures, as these added to my reading pleasure and made Ritchie’s writing engaging and relatable. I also loved the information on the animals. I found Ritchie's writing to be detailed, straightforward, and easy to comprehend. This travel memoir is well organized and paced. I hope to visit the Galápagos Islands someday using this book as a guide. I recommend Quito and the Galápagos: A Bucket List Adventure by Adelia E. Ritchie to all travelers and those who love books about adventures.
