It was clear to me when reading Rampage: A Jason Scarsdale Novel by Alan Brenham that this author truly knows his stuff. Written as a gritty detective novel, Rampage follows Detective Jason Scarsdale as he transitions back to the homicide division from the sex crimes division in the Austin police department. Assigned a new partner, the enthusiastic and highly attractive Tatum Harper, Scarsdale gets prepared to chase down a vicious gang already accused of several brutal murders. With death tolls rising and a trip with his daughter to visit his romantic partner, Dani Mueller, in the offing, the pressures on Detective Scarsdale mount.
I love police procedurals. Love them. The mystery, action, adventure and excitement of the books have always intrigued me and kept me coming back for more. But I must admit that I’ve been getting a bit jaded lately. So many of them seem the same, it’s almost as if some authors are following a script. Not so with Alan Brenham’s Rampage: A Jason Scarsdale Novel. This book had me hooked from page one, and took me on a wild ride from there. The character development, pacing, scene development and overall feel of the book were spot on. I meant to pick it up and read a few chapters before bed; instead I plowed through the whole thing, determined to get to the end to find out what happened.
Rampage would appeal to any reader who enjoys action/adventure, mysteries, detective books or police procedurals, or any reader who just likes a good book in general. This is the first book that I’ve read by Alan Brenham, but it certainly won’t be the last. I can’t wait to see what this author has for us next!
