Random Targets is the third book in the DCI Jeff Temple Series written by James Raven. Temple was getting ready to join the staff for an evening out at the pub when the news of a major crash on the M27 in Hampshire was announced. They watched on the pub's television as the accident was being covered until Temple receives word from Chief Superintendent Beresford that a paramedic has reported that one of the victims of the crash had been shot. Temple and his crew drive out to the scene to start their investigation. Temple is horrified when he recognizes his girlfriend’s car in the wreckage and is informed that she has sustained serious injuries and has been rushed to the hospital.
James Raven’s police procedural, Random Targets, is a well-plotted and compelling story. The reader gets to watch as the police examine the area for clues, which lead them to bullet casings and help them determine the type of gun used in the attack. I’m always interested in finding police procedural series, as this type of mystery is my favorite, and was pleased with Raven’s presentation of DCI Temple and his support staff. Raven’s writing is lean and sinewy, and his descriptions make the investigation real. I also enjoyed those parts of the story that are seen through the eyes of the killer, who seems to take pleasure in the carnage he’s created. Raven keeps up the tension throughout the story, and the action fairly sizzles until the very end. Random Targets is exciting and credible and it’s recommended for fans of mysteries, especially those who enjoy police procedurals.
