Aggressive Chinese posturing in the South China Sea escalates to the point of an invasion of a group of islands whose ownership remains a contentious issue in that part of the world. Scott Jansen, a company commander with the First Battalion's C company, otherwise known as The Knights, knows deep down in his heart that despite his and his wife Laurel's deepest wishes, it is only a matter of time before America gets dragged into another needless war courtesy of her treaty commitments. The inevitable day comes, and Scott and his team ship off to the Spratly Islands where, unknown to the young officer, a baptism of fire awaits these brave soldiers in Galen D. Peterson's Redcon One.

Galen D. Peterson's meticulous research and attention to detail in Redcon One is commendable. His choice of the South China Sea as the focal point reflects the current geopolitical situation, adding a layer of realism to the narrative. The combat formations and tactics are a joy to follow, and the political maneuvering is equally good. Scott's rise through the ranks creates an engaging origin story, while the methods he applies when encouraging his troops even in the face of overwhelming odds provide the perfect subplot for action genre fans. The best part of this intriguing narrative is how Galen evenly balances the emotional aspects of the novel with the action-packed battle scenes. The portrayal of Laurel's emotional turmoil when she senses something has happened to Scott is an example of this and a powerful testament to the resilience of love in the face of war. Peterson deserves plaudits for Redcon One.
