No matter what a story is about, the first thing I want to listen to is the voice or tone. The author must be able to get my attention and sustain it for the first few pages to get me interested in reading more. In Rediscovering Charlie, J.P. Maximus did more than that. The author got me spellbound by the mellow, somewhat humorous voice of the narrator, a voice that beautifully reflects the character of the protagonist. You will take a liking to Charles MacKinnon the moment you encounter him in the story, but that is just the beginning of the fun in this medical slash science fiction slash thriller. Dr. Charles MacKinnon and his son Charlie are about to make a revolutionary breakthrough in the history of medicine, creating the gene therapy that could cure all diseases. But then evil forces are working endlessly to make sure this enterprise fails. What would it take them to save themselves, their technology, and humanity?
In a fascinating first person narrative voice, J.P. Maximus combines the art of storytelling with brilliant wit and endearing humor to keep readers turning from one gripping page to the next. It’s a story with a powerful premise, a phenomenal conflict, and great characters. The theme of family opens the narrative and remains in the background of the story. Readers will enjoy the way the author handles loss in the story and then they are thrown into a whole medical universe where miracles do happen. After reading this book, I haven’t stopped wondering if this isn’t doable. The realism that permeates the writing makes it feel like an experience happening to the reader. Rediscovering Charlie will have readers on the edge of their seats, caring about the characters and exploring the psychological conflicts as well as the moral dilemmas key characters face. A really exciting read!
