David Edward's book “Religion – The Devil's Best Idea” takes on a topic that is full of hazards: religion and how it is not really such a good thing. Mr. Edwards explains the background of religions and uses many quotes from the Bible to explain what faith is and how it affects human nature (or should affect it). He talks about the Bible, its history and the people who wrote it. His book is all about the question of why people are religious, what faith is and how it is used for people's own good (or bad). He examines whether people really need religion to be someone who believes in God.

“Religion – The Devil's Best Idea” by David Edwards is a rather short book but this is not a negative thing. It shows that a good writer can get his point across without filling up hundreds of pages and not saying anything interesting at all. I usually do not read books about religion but I made an exception with this book because the title caught my interest. Even though the book was not 100 per cent what I expected, I rather enjoyed reading it. I actually wished the book would have been longer and that it would have examined a few cases of how religion misuses the concept of God to do bad things. There are a few examples but it would have been so interesting to read even more about it and to see various examples across history. The book succeeds in one thing: it makes the reader think. David Edwards uses many quotes from the Bible but also makes clear that the Bible is a book written by normal people and that not everything in it should be taken as a golden rule. I also like the way he writes and how he tries to open people's eyes to the “imagined moral authority” of churches and priests. The book is not perfect but it certainly gets its point across and doesn't waste the reader's time.
