Revelation Trilogy: Pacifica - Judgement - Sovereign by Thomas E. Burrell begins on the planet of Pacifica in a post-apocalyptic universe. Despite their centuries-old battles with other genetically modified survivors, the inhabitants of Pacifica have found a fragile peace within their self-affirming community. The warrior Theron has grown up on the green peninsula, unaware that every strategic move is watched by a ruthless Commonwealth overlord just beyond the stars. As Pacifica awakens from its delusion, it must ally with the two other planets in its sector to resist the Commonwealth, or risk permanent enslavement to its greed.
I found this trilogy gripping from the start. I was invested immediately in the well-drawn characters, which are engaging and likable. An ongoing theme throughout the three novels is that ‘nothing is as it seems’ and Thomas E. Burrell uses it masterfully to keep turning the plot on its head. The characters are not how they appear and nor is the universe. The Pacifica people believe they’re alone and direct their energies toward battling the genetically modified enemy on the other side of the wall. But an even greater enemy observes them in silence. Theron is ridiculed for his tiny stature on Pacifica, but when he reaches the planet Arista, he is a giant to its inhabitants. There are many instances like these where the author skillfully uses the element of surprise to overturn the reader’s perception. I loved the vivid descriptions of the peninsula and the arena and lived through each nail-biting scene. The politics and hierarchy within the world-building are pure genius. It’s an easy series to get completely lost in and I loved the premise of earth ships seeking sanctuary from a technological disaster. Revelation Trilogy is highly moralistic, and I appreciated its clear humanitarian boundaries. It’s a brilliant trilogy, and I loved it. My favorite quote is by June, who says: “When you don’t know what to say, just tell the truth.”
