Richard: War Erupts by Michael W Hickman is book four in the titular series. Its lead-up, in brief, follows Richard, a typical teen from Ohio, who discovers he's the heir to a galactic kingdom. With the help of AAL, he travels to claim his throne, facing opposition and forming alliances. He is constantly up against uncontrollable powers, facing a treasonous Senator Spartacus, and also falling in love with the anthropomorphic fox, Amber. As Richard hones his powers, including teleportation and shielding, he prioritizes his love for Amber, who's become more feral due to pregnancy but faces the looming threat of an ancient dragon. Now, after defeating the extra-dimensional dragons, Richard seeks a break as ruler of a galactic empire with Amber and his children. However, new threats from the Spartacus family and rising tensions between humans and non-humans threaten to ignite a galaxy-wide civil war.
“...my mate shall suffer greatly, but he must become the great leader he is destined to be, though only if he can overcome his weaknesses.” Michael W Hickman does an excellent job of leaning heavily into Richard's multifaceted role as a king, partner, father, and leader, in War Erupts, showing the weight of his massive responsibilities and deep emotional strain. I really liked the Henry-Richard connection and, in particular, a high-stakes moment when Henry is willing to put himself at significant risk and sacrifice. Hickman writes in the perfect blend of intelligent wit and the creative elements of science fiction and fantasy. Overall, with his well-drawn characters and persuasive narrative, Hickman offers an entertaining fourth installment to his series. He employs a hearty interplay of suspense and emotion that keeps readers invested. There are plenty of surprises and an ending that promises more to come, and I look forward to continuing the journey.
