Roseanna White has given the reader much food for thought in her latest novel entitled "Ring of Secrets." In this novel set in the Revolutionary War period, we meet Winter Reeves, an aristocratic orphan woman who lives with her grandparents. The grandparents have but one wish: to rid themselves of their granddaughter via an opportunistic marriage. Winter has other goals in mind. Unbeknown to the grandparents, Winter's father is alive and serving in the Patriot army. Winter has elected to become involved in a highly dangerous spy ring in New York. She is a rebel who plays the fool and no one suspects her involvement until Bennet Lane returns to town. He also is not what he seems. He claims an identity as a Yale professor which he is. In truth, his mission is to find spies who threaten to undermine British goals of domination over the Colonials.
This is a charming story of intrigue and history as well as a profound human character study. The characters are earthy and believable and they facilitate the coming alive of historical fiction. The dynamics between members of the spy ring are fascinating and the interactions between Winter and her various suitors are captivating. In particular, the dynamics between Winter and Bennet will hold the reader spellbound and wanting more information. Information is seemingly teased from the characters so that the reader is unsure of the outcome at any given time. Most readers will love this endearing story.
