Rise of Knight and Sword by Miriam Wade takes place in Avalon, the city of kings. This is not your typical Arthur and Guinevere story. Wade places Avalon in a time of sky towers, airships, bounty hunters, and dinosaurs that roam free on parklands. Guinevere is an archivist in the city and works in the central library. She is exceptional at her work and truly loves everything ancient. Guinevere knows the city is filled with corruption, but mostly her life is mundane, predictable, and at times boring. Her life is turned upside down when she discovers a map that will lead her to Excalibur. When she and her friends discover the map, the Rangers of Uther and Gorgolis attempt to silence the girls and keep the map for themselves. Guinevere takes the map and runs. She finds herself hiding in an airship in the cargo hold. Now on the run for her life, Guinevere befriends the pilot of the airship, Arthur Pendragon. There is immediate chemistry between the two, but she is not so thrilled to meet his friend Mordred. Mordred is a bounty hunter, and thief, who takes an instant dislike to Guinevere.

Rise of Knight and Sword, by Miriam Wade is not your typical Arthurian story. The traditional characters are all present, but not in the time-honored way the reader may know them. The author has created an incredible alternate reality for the story of Arthur, Guinevere, The Knights of the Round Table, Camelot, and Avalon. The entire story flows so well from one page to the next that the reader will find they are immersed in the pages. As each character is introduced, the author gives an outstanding, detailed description of who the reader is meeting, what they look like, how they act and interact with other characters, and clearly states their role in the story. I was not disappointed with the characters, their roles, and how the plot unfolded. Placing the story of Arthur in the times of dinosaurs, airships, and big city towers brings new life to the legend of Camelot. The plot is action-packed, filled with smugglers, bounty hunters, corruption, sword fights, and the history of the future. Never would I have thought of creating such an unusual plot to bring Arthur Pendragon back to life once again to become the once and future king of Avalon. This author has turned traditional Camelot upside down and produced an exciting new version, filled with drama and suspense and I am now a huge fan! Thank you for giving Arthur a new twist. Whoever picks up this book will not be disappointed. Congratulations, Miriam Wade, for writing Rise of Knight and Sword. I look forward to reading more of your work.

Rise of Knight and Sword is a YA fantasy by Miriam Wade. Guinevere Cornwall resides on the outskirts of Avalon. She works as an archivist in the library, where she researches, maintains, and translates manuscripts. The location of the legendary sword Excalibur had enormous significance for Guinevere. She discovers a map showing the whereabouts of Excalibur and discovers a plot to take over the throne from the current king. Guinevere decides to follow the map to find Excalibur. She meets Mordred and Arthur, two bounty hunters, and enlists their help with her quest. Mordred and Arthur join Guinevere’s journey as she follows the map and tries to save Avalon from Captain Gorlois. Rangers who are loyal to Captain Gorlois are on her trail and would do anything to possess Excalibur.

Rise of Knight and Sword is a reinvention of the King Arthur tale with a modern twist. Miriam Wade took me on an adventure so that I joined Guinevere on her journey. The plot had me intrigued from the beginning. It was a page-turner, and the suspense kept me on the edge of my seat. The story was fast-paced and action-packed. The characters were well-developed and introduced in such a way that I got to know them. My favorite was Guinevere. She was smart and intent on finding Excalibur. She even joined forces with unwanted allies in her quest. I did not like Mordred. He was sometimes a total idiot. The story was brilliantly written and exciting. I could never predict what would happen next, and I enjoyed reading it. The story exceeded my expectations by far.

Rise of Knight and Sword is a work of fiction in the fantasy, steampunk adventure, and interpersonal drama subgenres. It is intended for the young adult reading audience but can easily be enjoyed by mature middle-grade readers and adults alike, and it was penned by author Miriam Wade. This gorgeously inventive work takes us to Avalon, a city of kings with a unique blend of sky towers, airships, dinosaurs, and intrigue. Guinevere, an archivist, stumbles upon a plot to seize the throne and sets out to find the legendary Excalibur. Pursued by those who seek to claim the throne, she forges an uneasy alliance with two bounty hunters. As they navigate a steampunk fantasy world reminiscent of the 1920s, Guinevere faces challenges, including smugglers, prehistoric creatures, hidden agendas, and a pervasive sense of mistrust.

Author Miriam Wade has lovingly crafted an engaging experience that combines the allure of Arthurian legend with an imaginative steampunk setting that spares no detail, immersing us deep in its atmospheric glow. The blending of historical elements and fantastical concepts created a unique opportunity to learn about the world around us through the characters' eyes, and there was something interesting to discover on every page. Guinevere's journey, fraught with danger and unexpected alliances, kept the plot moving while exploring themes of trust, loyalty, and the pursuit of a better future. This was aided by Wade’s close attention to narrative flow, speech, and thought presentation, which helped instantly introduce the attitude and charm of new characters as well as give us deeper insights into Guinevere’s feelings. The book's fusion of classic mythology and modern sensibilities made for a captivating and entertaining read, and overall I would not hesitate to recommend Rise of Knight and Sword for YA fans seeking something engaging and unique.
