Rise of Knight and Sword by Miriam Wade takes place in Avalon, the city of kings. This is not your typical Arthur and Guinevere story. Wade places Avalon in a time of sky towers, airships, bounty hunters, and dinosaurs that roam free on parklands. Guinevere is an archivist in the city and works in the central library. She is exceptional at her work and truly loves everything ancient. Guinevere knows the city is filled with corruption, but mostly her life is mundane, predictable, and at times boring. Her life is turned upside down when she discovers a map that will lead her to Excalibur. When she and her friends discover the map, the Rangers of Uther and Gorgolis attempt to silence the girls and keep the map for themselves. Guinevere takes the map and runs. She finds herself hiding in an airship in the cargo hold. Now on the run for her life, Guinevere befriends the pilot of the airship, Arthur Pendragon. There is immediate chemistry between the two, but she is not so thrilled to meet his friend Mordred. Mordred is a bounty hunter, and thief, who takes an instant dislike to Guinevere.
Rise of Knight and Sword, by Miriam Wade is not your typical Arthurian story. The traditional characters are all present, but not in the time-honored way the reader may know them. The author has created an incredible alternate reality for the story of Arthur, Guinevere, The Knights of the Round Table, Camelot, and Avalon. The entire story flows so well from one page to the next that the reader will find they are immersed in the pages. As each character is introduced, the author gives an outstanding, detailed description of who the reader is meeting, what they look like, how they act and interact with other characters, and clearly states their role in the story. I was not disappointed with the characters, their roles, and how the plot unfolded. Placing the story of Arthur in the times of dinosaurs, airships, and big city towers brings new life to the legend of Camelot. The plot is action-packed, filled with smugglers, bounty hunters, corruption, sword fights, and the history of the future. Never would I have thought of creating such an unusual plot to bring Arthur Pendragon back to life once again to become the once and future king of Avalon. This author has turned traditional Camelot upside down and produced an exciting new version, filled with drama and suspense and I am now a huge fan! Thank you for giving Arthur a new twist. Whoever picks up this book will not be disappointed. Congratulations, Miriam Wade, for writing Rise of Knight and Sword. I look forward to reading more of your work.
