Risky Witchness by Ada Bell is the second book in the Haunted Haven series. Emma has settled into her new life and cherishes the opportunity to spend time with her grandfather who she didn’t get to know when he was alive. She treats herself to a spa where she can relax until one of the other patrons, Darren, is found dead with his ghost standing over his body. This gives her the opportunity to help a spirit move into the afterlife so she begins to investigate Darren’s life. This leads her to a variety of suspects including his wife and her son. Just as she begins to bury the hatchet with Detective Pratt, she discovers that one of her bed-and-breakfast guests has been lying to her, which could land her in hot water.
Ada Bell takes you further into this magical world with another dazzling foray into magic, ghosts, and murder. Emma is more in her element now with magic and more comfortable using it, though still experiencing some growing pains. Her grandfather Walter is a lovely comic relief who adds lots of heart to the story and keeps her grounded. They have a sweet dynamic that’s even better than in book one. She also has Pink, her cat, an adorable character who never fails to take the spotlight whenever he’s in a scene. Ghosts are an important aspect of the world and are at the center of the mystery through Darren who Emma is determined to help. He’s a big personality that Bell uses as a way to establish trials for Emma to deal with while investigating. The mystery has some delightful twists and a satisfying conclusion that balances well against Bell's humor. Plenty of laugh-out-loud moments show how brilliantly Bell incorporates humor through the various characters. Another character that influences her throughout the mystery is the charming detective with whom she has friction and sparks, which adds another layer to the story by drawing out her stubbornness and determination. Risky Witchness is brilliantly funny with laugh-out-loud moments and charming characters in a mystery that has everything you loved from book one and much more.
