For many years, Kelli Hastings led a very material-minded, anxiety-ridden existence and worked long hours as an attorney.

In 2010, three weeks after her son was born, her younger brother died of Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Her father died of renal cancer six months to the day after her brother. These personal tragedies sparked within her a re-awakening.

Her journey led her deeper into the practice and study of Yoga, and then to India. Kelli spent about six months total in India, over the course of 3 years. She brought her young son with her each time - he was only 20 months old their first trip. In India, Kelli connected to and felt deeply the Love that permeates all of existence. It transformed her life and set her path on a different trajectory.

She wrote a book about her experiences and philosophy of life, "Rotten Minerva: Be an Unruly Warrior and Embark on a Spiritual Quest." Yogi and author Kelli Kristine Hastings presents Rotten Minerva: Be an Unruly Warrior and Embark on a Spiritual Quest. It is part memoir and part spirituality guide that presents recollections of events and circumstances that occurred in the past along with her perspectives, infused with her brand of wit. She believes that humankind is at a crossroads and hopes that her book will inspire you to undertake a transformative spiritual journey. The book is divided into four sections that reflect the four Padas of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras. The first section is called Love, which describes her philosophy in life. The second section is Practice, outlining the practical steps she took on her quest for truth and freedom. The third section is Magic, which presents stories of the inexplicable mysteries and enigmas that you might encounter on your path. The fourth section is Freedom, presenting the outcomes of your journey that the author hopes you will resolve to undertake.

Rotten Minerva is a creative and intelligent personal take on one yogi’s experience in practicing yoga. Many people take up yoga for its physical benefits, but Kelly Kristine Hastings shows you that it can benefit you spiritually. As yoga has profound spiritual roots, Hastings shows you that it is not limited to holistic postures as she brings out its deeper objectives. She connects mind, body, and spirit to gain unity, freedom, and peace of mind effectively. Throw in her philosophies and ideas that will make you think and even laugh at times. You are reading about a yogi who believes that it is possible to befriend mosquitoes. This is a book that allows you to look at yoga practice with a spiritual outlook to achieve peace within yourself and the world that you inhabit. It is a must-read for its fascinating blend of life writing, stories, and the practice of yoga geared toward total integration.

Pikasho Deka

In today's hectic day and age, it can be quite difficult to stay in tune with your inner spiritual beliefs and even harder to act on them. Through Rotten Minerva: Be an Unruly Warrior and Embark on a Spiritual Quest, yogi Kelli Kristine Hastings offers readers some valuable insights and tools to help them navigate their spirituality without having to sacrifice material aspects of life that make them human. The book is divided into four sections, mirroring the four "padas" of Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, including Love, where Hastings describes her philosophy using experiences from her own life. Practice is the section where she recounts some hilarious misadventures on her quest for truth and freedom. The section Magic touches upon the seemingly magical events in people's lives on their journey of self-discovery and fulfillment. The Freedom section showcases the end goal of the quest, which includes love, truth, and authenticity.

Incorporating personal anecdotes into a humor-filled narrative, Kelli Kristine Hastings demonstrates the fact that it is indeed possible for anyone to undertake a spiritual quest regardless of background or material vices because everyone is unique and has their path to finding truth and freedom. Using 90s movie references, quantum physics, and religious scriptures, Rotten Minerva paints a vivid portrait of how everyone is connected to the fabric of the cosmos. I may be paraphrasing here, but there is a certain quote in the book that I really liked. It goes something like, "The flipside of the suffering and real attraction of the realm is the humor and grit that comes along with the unique perspective of living on Earth as a human being." Highly recommended.
