Sadie Swan: A Story About Stealing by Gensy James welcomes young readers to a sparkling lakeside setting filled with tender moments and thoughtful lessons. The story follows Sadie, a young swan who loves her family, enjoys going to school, and treasures time with her friends. One day in the classroom, she spies a box of crayons on her teacher’s desk and decides to take them home. The next day, when the instructor realizes that crayons are missing, it causes a problem. Later on, while shopping with her mom and sister, Sadie witnesses someone else taking something that doesn’t belong to them. Her mother says it’s not okay to steal. Will Sadie tell the truth about the crayons, or will she keep it to herself? This alphabet adventure gently introduces themes of honesty, choices, and learning from mistakes. Graceful and bright, this storybook is sure to intrigue children who enjoy animals and nature tales.

I was especially drawn to Sadie Swan by Gensy James because my last name begins with S, and I felt immediately connected to how the swans in Amurtha Godage’s art curl and sweep into beautiful letter S shapes. As an educator, I think this would make an excellent read-aloud. It’s also sure to prompt thoughtful conversations about how stealing is bad, words that begin with S, and what they see in the pictures. The illustrations bring every page to life with fascinating textures and soft, watercolor-like hues. I think anyone reading this story will stay engaged because, while it's playful, it also teaches a great lesson. Whether S stands for secrets, sincerity, or second chances, this book is fantastic for learning about the importance of making good decisions.

Alphabet friends is the new Mr Men series

Simply splendid. The more of these Alphabet Friends books I read the more we love them. My nephew and niece and me that is. The traditional themes are strong throughout. In Sadie Swan, Gensy James touches on the tricky topic of stealing. But she does it so well. Any kid that reads this book will think twice before taking something without permission. Really good.

Absolutely super!

A difficult topic to discuss – stealing or taking things without permission. Gensy does it very subtly and I’m confident that my young grandson got the message. Daddy Swan singing whilst doing the housework was a laugh out loud moment for me and my grandson.
