Safe Cages: A Challenged Faith Novel by Michelle Bolanger is a beautiful and inspirational story of love that challenges the taboos and conventions of religion and popular culture. Their friendship begins when they first meet at the batting cages. Michael Casio feels an attraction for Sam Jones that he never thought possible. But his Christian upbringing gets in the way and he flees the city. Sam doesn’t understand why his friend suddenly disappears and is almost convinced that they won’t see each other again when Michael suddenly returns. They find in each other a love they can risk everything for. An encounter in the Cornerstone Community Church changes the way they understand God, themselves, and the mystery of love.

Michelle Bolanger has opened a perspective in love that I have never considered and has also shown a fresh perspective on the way God looks at us. The narrative is beautiful and insightful, and the emotions of the characters, as well as their quest for meaning, emerge powerfully throughout the story. The question that comes out strongly in this story is: Can one really find true love in places that contradict their religious faith? The emotional and psychological conflict is skillfully developed and readers learn to care about the characters right off the bat. The narrative voice is equally clear in the first person, and alternating between Michael and Sam creates suspense which maintains the attention of the reader while allowing them to follow the strongly written points of view. Safe Cages: A Challenged Faith Novel is an inspiring tale that will challenge the way we look at homosexual couples. Enlightening and engaging!
