Samantha Smee: A Pirate's Life by M.C. Dingman is a charming adventure that puts a fun spin on Neverland with a clever heroine at the helm. Before the legends you know, there were stories you’ve never heard and a hero you have yet to meet. That hero is Samantha (aka Sammi) Smee. With the help of her fairy Florafauna, she takes the sea by storm and engages in epic adventures with the pirates she calls family. She has spent her life living in disguise on Captain Hook’s ship and has enjoyed every second as they travel to amazing places, from the North to the South Pole. She’ll need every skill they’ve taught her as she gathers a unique assortment of allies and sets out to face Captain Blackbeard. But she’ll do whatever it takes to protect those she loves.

The story has the same wonder as Peter Pan but is geared toward modern readers, which is a lovely way of continuing the joy and imagination that Neverland offers. The setting gives the story a natural, magical quality as it’s where you expect to see mermaids, pirates, and even giants. This creates a subtle fairytale element that is endearing and joyful. The era creates a reason that Sammi has to go in disguise, and why she doesn’t want to be society’s depiction of what it means to be a girl. The writing is aimed at younger readers, though the magical atmosphere is something that adults can enjoy with their children. Sammi’s journey is largely about accepting who she is; however, the friendships she has help her with this discovery. The people in her life, particularly her ‘aunties,’ build her up and offer encouragement with every step. This is done humorously and playfully, which helps give the story a childlike tone. The incorporation of songs offers a unique approach to the writing structure, as the tunes are easy to sing. These are often used for comedy and to show the jovial nature of the pirates, which makes them more welcoming. Charming, creative, and playful, Samantha Smee takes you on a clever journey into the wonder and magic of Neverland.
