Santa Claus and YOU! is a Christmas rhyming book for children written by Mark Watson and illustrated by Richard Caine. Told from a second-person perspective, it follows the young reader (“you”), in what appears to be a dream, helping Santa Claus deliver presents around the world on Christmas Eve. Time stands still, and everything appears to be frozen, allowing Santa to fulfill his duties worldwide. Young readers get to know Santa's reindeer and elves, and have fun with him as he takes a nibble of biscuit only every millionth house, lest his trousers burst. When the young narrator wakes up in bed the next morning, she is disappointed that it was only a dream. But wait: she is holding the magical snowflake from the night before that sat on her hand and wouldn't melt!
Santa Claus and YOU! is an immersive story for young readers. As it is narrated in the second person, this makes the young reader the hero of the tale, and they are sure to feel included in the magic of the story. The rhyming is playful and imaginative, and Mark Watson's writing is on point for children: simple enough yet still challenging. Richard Caine's illustrations are vibrant and brightly colored, which gives them that Christmas feel. They are also unique in a way that creates an artistic touch, and blend very well with the story. Santa Claus and YOU! is an exceptional book for young readers, and one that I highly recommend.
