It takes a special person and a special dog to be brave enough to venture into disaster zones and rescue those who have been trapped. In Sarah E. Endline’s Sarah and Jasper Riot for the FDNY!, Jasper, a rescue dog from Florida, accompanies his owner, Sarah, to meet and learn about some of the great dog heroes who risked their lives to rescue others trapped in the fatal Twin Towers disaster that shocked the world. There’s Bucca, the first-ever FDNY K-9 unit dog, Petey, Howie, Judge, Ray, and Yadi (all with the surname “the Dog”). And then there’s the Randall's Island Training Center, known as “The Rock,” where all these brave dogs received their required training. Jasper the Dog and Sarah are in for an interesting journey of remembrance, one to honor the brave and the fallen of that tragic event, and the New York City firehouses that were the historic first responders.

Sarah E. Endline’s children’s book, Sarah and Jasper Riot for the FDNY! Written with Love for the 25th Anniversary of September 11, 2001, is an inspiring look at the brave men, women, and their working dogs. The plot follows Jasper’s adventure as he visits New York’s firehouses and the training center, and meets and learns about some of the brave canine rescuers that were present on that fateful day. What he learns is that courage comes in many forms, and sometimes courage is a gift of love and loyalty. The language is simple so early readers can follow along, and the canine rescue biographies are heartfelt and fascinating to read. The illustrations are bright, bold, and colorful and add another interesting dimension to the story. This is a great tribute to honor the heroes of 9/11.
