J.M. Barrie once said, “All the world is made of faith, and trust, and pixie dust,” and in Scarlett & the Fairy Magic by Cindy Draughon, young readers are invited to believe in just that. Tucked deep in the woods is a fairy village, where Scarlett Grace lives. She is a little fairy who’s just waiting for her wand to shine with real magic. When it doesn’t, her Fairy Grandma hints that true power doesn’t come from wishing. She must learn how to grow it inside herself. When her beloved animal friends are in trouble, the young fairy is nudged to look beyond herself and realizes they need her help. Will she finally have the powers she wants? Will she be able to help her pals?
As an educator, I think Scarlett & the Fairy Magic by Cindy Draughon is an enchanting picture book that can be used for a mini-unit on kindness, empathy, and noticing others. Scarlett’s choices can be used to begin discussions about how our words and actions “light up” the people and world around us, or invite children to share times they’ve used “kindness magic” in their own lives. I can also see it extended to activities such as writing kindness wishes, drawing a fairy forest, or creating a classroom kindness tree. The gentle, rhythmic language is perfect for children. They will enjoy citing recurring phrases and predicting what comes next. The illustrations by Larissa Curido enhance the wonder, and the soft, subtle colors help keep kids engaged as the tale unfolds. Youngsters who enjoy whimsical tales with a lesson will truly love this story.
