In SEAL Team Thunder Dragons: Cheating Death by Augusta Wright, a high-stakes mission in the DMZ of Vietnam in 1967 goes disastrously wrong for SEAL Lex and his team. After a devastating ambush resulting in the death of one of his team and separation, Lex finds himself injured and in the hospital, haunted by a mysterious female voice and the disappearance of his remaining teammates. His recovery is further complicated by the appearance of CIA agents demanding answers about a stolen ancient dragon necklace, a relic Lex knows nothing about. But the voice in his head does. The plot thickens as Lex discovers a connection between recent dragon tattoos his team received and the unfolding mystery, hinting at a supernatural element tied to the missing necklace and his comrades’ fates. The missing necklace can ignite more than personal conflict. Time is running out, but can Lex unravel the mystery before it's too late?

I found Augusta Wright’s characters to be deftly sculpted. Lex is a resilient protagonist, driven by loyalty to his team and a yearning for his lost love, Leah. His internal struggle with his injuries and the surreal experience of the voice in his head create an atmosphere of suspense and tension for the reader while introducing the supernatural element. Even when fractured, the SEAL team's dynamic highlights their bond. The setting of Vietnam in 1967 provides a tense and dangerous backdrop for the initial conflict, while the hospital setting offers space for introspection and the introduction of the broader conspiracy. The central conflict revolves around survival, the search for his missing teammates, and unraveling the mystery of an ancient dragon necklace while Lex grapples with physical and emotional wounds and a potential rekindling of a past romance. SEAL Team Thunder Dragons is well-plotted, intelligently paced, and tense. It was a delightful read, a real page-turner for me.
