Secret of the Dragon Egg by N.A. Davenport is the first book in the Dragon Riders of Avria series. Will Goodwin and his family's yacht trip across the Atlantic turns into a horrifying nightmare when they get caught in a storm and find themselves washed ashore in the mysterious land of Avria. With his beloved uncle missing, Will and his parents set off toward the city of Aldlake, where they find work in the manor of Elder Madoc. Proving himself to be an adept stable hand, Will inadvertently stumbles upon a unique dragon egg. Alongside three other egg holders, he makes an arduous journey to the hatchling grounds in Fire Mountain, running into unexpected trouble when his egg is stolen by his nemesis. With time running out, can Will find his egg and become a member of the legendary dragon riders?
Young adults who love stories like Eragon by Christopher Paolini will have an absolute blast with Secret of the Dragon Egg. N.A. Davenport has created a magnificent world full of dragons and other magical creatures, where danger lurks around every corner, and young teenagers contend to become the next generation of heroes riding dragons. Will is a hard worker, loyal, and has a natural affinity for animals, making him the perfect candidate for a dragon rider. His friendships with Anri and Perrin felt genuine and wholesome. Overall, this is a series that shows plenty of promise. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I look forward to reading the sequels. Recommended for kids and young adults alike.
