In Sedona by J.F. McCarney, the two main characters are Randall Jenkins III, known as Colt, and Meredith Slayton. Colt used to be a bronc rider, but after a riding accident, he started working with abused and feral horses. Meredith is the breadwinner in her family, trying to be there for her husband, who is trying to start up a business after being laid off, and Cassie, their daughter, who is a demanding child. Each of them finds that they are always doing things for others and never take time for themselves. Colt and Meredith meet in a coffee shop where Colt is reading journals while waiting to go to a Probate Hearing for his sister Alley's estate. Meredith, on her way to work, stopped in to get coffee. They start chatting and talking, and find themselves drawn to each other, both hiding what others think of them, which has shaped their lives.
Sedona by J.F. McCarney is an unusual romance between two people from different backgrounds, both trying to run away from hurts and things they had to give up to be who the people in their lives expect them to be. The story is poignant, and the ending is not what the reader expected. It will give the reader food for thought about how many people are going through life always at the beck and call of others, never being the best they were meant to be. I really enjoyed this well-written book. Thank you to the author for an insightful story that had me doing a lot of thinking about my own life.
