It’s 18th-century England, and the land is home to a mysterious highwayman who steals from wealthy and corrupt aristocrats to give to the poor. When Thomas Hopkins, a clerk, runs into the Shadow one evening, little do both know how this chance encounter will affect their lives. Who is the Shadow of the Moor? What is his story? How did he become a highwayman? Thomas finds these questions intriguing and knows that his life as a clerk pales in comparison to finding out more about this mysterious stranger. Learn more about the Shadow and Thomas in Shadow of the Moor by Michael Nash-Whitmore.

Shadow of the Moor by Michael Nash-Whitmore is a light and easy read. With its major theme of a band of misfits finding their places together, it’s reminiscent of a blend of Robin Hood and Bonnie and Clyde—an LGBTQ+ version. But Shadow of the Moor also has so much more to give with its additional themes of friendship and fighting for a higher cause. The plot and pacing are fast-paced as we follow Thomas and the Shadow’s adventures with their friends. I also enjoyed the fight scenes immensely. The author does a great job of describing the sword fight sequence, and I could picture the scenes easily in my mind. The dialogue and language used by the characters also fit the setting of the novel. Shadow of the Moor is a suspenseful tale with just the right touch of romance that makes it an enjoyable read.
