Shallow Basin by Suzanne Cowles introduces us to Beau Boudreaux in his senior year as he tries to change his destiny. His parents, who have schemed since he was a child, have kept him on the fast track to being a lawyer, marrying a girl he has no interest in and remaining in the small town that he hates. The clan that Witch Crenshaw belongs to, however, has different plans for Beau; they need him to find out what his true lineage is. All of this, for them, is to secure and keep the blood line going and keep an urban legend in the woods.

Chaos, evil, love and a little bit of Hollywood glamour are tossed into a blender and mixed into this book. From the first page I felt drawn into the world that Suzanne Cowles created. This book has some complex story lines laid out in it and there is a lot going on within the pages, but I enjoy a book that makes me think as I read. There is a great deal of content that is mature and more adult themed than you would find in most YA novels, however, none of it is over the top or too bad. If you want a kick in the horror chops, this is truly a great read. Evil is a big theme and it keeps the flow of the book going well. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys YA and horror.
