What can I say about She Was a Friend of Mine by Jasheem Wilson except Wow. Powerful. I liked the way the cover of the book looked; however, it was the title which pulled me. From the moment I opened She Was a Friend of Mine, I was sucked deeper and deeper into the world of Scheyenne Henrietta Iverson. The story takes place in East Palo Alto California. Scheyenne, who prefers to be called Shi, was raised by her mother and grandmother. She was raised along with her older and younger brothers, Freemen and Pier Iverson. Scheyenne never knew her father because she'd been told he passed away from a heart attack when she was an infant. Life was normal for Shi until it wasn't.

As I read this book I realized that things are not always what you think. Just when you think something is going to happen or the author is leaning one way, he blows your mind, jerking you in the opposite direction. She Was a Friend of Mine is the first book in a series and I will definitely be reading the next book. I cannot wait to see what happens. This author takes you on a journey through the mind of Scheyenne Iverson. From the moment Shi starts to speak, you want to listen. When she is going through a hard time, you feel for her. When she cries, you cry. I loved the characters in this book, but most of all, I loved Shi. This is a must-read!
