Shrimply Dead by Maggie Toussaint is the third book in the Seafood Caper Mystery series. River Holloway Merrick is no stranger to homicide so when one of her customers – Jasmine Garr - is murdered, she sets out to investigate Jasmine's death. She steps into the veterinarian's life which takes a few turns, from discovering mysterious alligator tracks to taking home two animals in need. Her list of suspects continues to grow, leading her to a variety of people such as an estranged family member of Jasmine's and the dedicated chicken lady. River turns to her husband and friends for help while keeping her catering business running smoothly and being a doting aunt.

From the sweet moments with her husband to delightfully chaotic family ones to sleuthing fun, Maggie Toussaint keeps the charm flowing and the twists coming. River leads an envy-worthy balanced life with her marriage, catering career, family, being a pet mom and sleuth. She manages to find time for each of these threads so even though it's not perfect, she leads a fulfilling and well-rounded life. The story has a strong dose of family themes with scenes that capture the love and bond with her new little niece and nephew and the lovely relationship with her husband. These moments also add to the comic relief of the story and the lightness of the tone.

The supporting characters have various eccentricities and agendas which are revealed as River digs into Jasmine's life through her various connections such as the Chicken Lady (who treats her chickens as if they were her children), Linette (a rival vet), and a wild animal trapper. River's catering business is her life which is seen through several food appearances that are incorporated. Two special animals have a part to play in the story such as the victim's cat Ivy that is frightened of people but takes to River immediately and a dog in need of love that she can't resist helping. A fun-filled sleuthing adventure from start to finish, Shrimply Dead is charming, witty, and will make you hungry by the end.
