Sick as Our Secrets by Jim Christopher is the second offering in the Utopian Testament series. It is loaded with the kind of action seen in the first installment and with a mix of supernatural elements as this story focuses on saving the life of a boy with a special gift. Utopia Farms is located in the rural Texas countryside where Hawk, the brooding protagonist, works. Hawk has enough skills to keep the marijuana dispensary in order while dealing with the usual workplace politics involving incompetent co-workers. Utopia Farms looks legit in its image as well as on paper, but it has its shady dealings. Hawk will find himself facing someone who bears him a grudge rooted in the past, and this stranger is bent on going after Emerson, a young boy who has the power to heal and see through people’s emotions.
What impressed me about Jim Christopher’s storytelling is his ability to foreshadow without cutting corners. He allows you access to information that the main protagonist doesn’t have. It then becomes suspenseful as you read with bated breath whether or not the protagonist will discover what you already know. Moreover, Christopher cares a great deal about all his characters in how he illustrates the daily grind of their working lives. As for the plotline, Sick as Our Secrets is certain of the direction where it wants to go, but it has enough twists to remain mysterious and unpredictable. If Elmore Leonard and Stephen King had the chance to collaborate on a novel, Sick as Our Secrets would be the result. Jim Christopher is the name to watch out for when it comes to supernatural thrillers.
