In Sienna Searches for Summer by Colleen Driscoll, readers meet Sienna, a curious girl on a mission to discover what summer is. It begins when her friend, Silas, mentions how summer has arrived, causing her to ask, “What is summer?” Instead of simply telling her the answer, he encourages her to look around and find it. So, she sets out to do just that. Along the way, Sienna discovers signs of the season, like blossoming flowers and gardens full of ripening fruits and vegetables, and meets animals and insects who share clues to help her solve the mystery. Each encounter gives her more information. By the end of the story, will she finally understand what summer truly is, or will she be more confused than ever?

Sienna Searches for Summer, written and illustrated by Colleen Driscoll, is a heartwarming tale that completely drew me in with its calming tone and visually stunning illustrations. Each page is quite striking and uses natural objects such as flower petals, leaves, seeds, and more. The page I liked the most is the one with real hydrangeas—my favorite flower—and a small butterfly made from four petals. Beyond the artwork, as an educator, I believe this children’s book would be a great read-aloud for early elementary classrooms to spark discussions about summer, the other seasons, and the objects used to make the pictures. It could be extended by having students create their own piece of art using objects they find outside during a walk. Fans of nature stories and seasonal books will love this thoughtful and enjoyable journey through summer’s sights and sounds.
