Sight of Me, by Dr. Qiana Gray, is self-described as a sight word comic book. It is intended to help children express their emotions. The overriding goal is to help them acknowledge and comprehend their emotions and those of others. Gray’s conviction is that children can better deal with others by understanding their feelings. To accomplish her goal, Gray gives children a scenario: they had a bad day, along with an accompanying drawing showing a small girl put into quiet time. Gray asks what the girl may have done to be put into quiet time. As the children think about the situation, they learn to deal with similar circumstances in their own lives. This comic book includes drawings that help explain what’s happening on each page.
Reading Sight of Me can be an excellent way of helping children recognize and deal with their emotions. Dr. Qiana Gray clearly cares about children and wants to help them develop into thoughtful, caring, self-aware adults. It contains diary pages so children can write down their emotions and build their verbal and written skills. Children will learn to master their emotions, as well as understand the emotions of others. They’ll be better equipped to develop constructive rapport with those around them. Gray writes that this comic book is especially for children who are black or of color. But all children can benefit from reading or having it read to them and working through Gray's scenario.
