In Rusty the Rooster by Mik Revohlad, from the moment he hatched, Rusty was curious to explore his new surroundings. He was eager to learn new things, and his playful antics were entertaining. As Rusty grew older, his feathers changed to an impressive red and gold pattern. It made him more confident and bolder, thus upstaging the other roosters. While exploring the barn, Rusty opened an old trunk and saw an assortment of brightly colored fabrics, feathers, and other accessories. He tried on a red bow tie with jewels that inspired him to prance about the farmyard, much to the animals' amusement, or disapproval. Bertrand, a pompous rooster, disliked the attention Rusty received from the hens and challenged him. Rusty reluctantly stood up to Bertrand, hoping to persuade his animal friends that it’s okay to try new things while respecting the traditional ways.
Mik Revohlad’s children's story is about acceptance and embracing our own individuality. It reminded me of the Animal Farm characters. Rusty wanted to prove to everyone that doing unusual things, or stepping out of one's comfort zone, can have positive effects. He didn’t want a typical farm life. He wore the red bow with self-assurance, despite what other animals thought. This is a well-written story for children who lack confidence or are afraid to express themselves because they don’t want to be mocked by their peers. Bertrand was accustomed to being one of the popular roosters, but his personality was so different. Rusty the Rooster: A Tale of Feathers, Flair and Finding Yourself is a lovely story that I recommend.
