Lunches with Ed: A Dementia Journey of Love by Judy Collier is a heartfelt and deeply human memoir that tells a love story challenged by the slow, heartbreaking progression of dementia. Told through personal journal entries and reflections, the book follows Collier’s life with her husband, Ed, from his diagnosis through years of caregiving, his eventual move to long-term care, and the bittersweet final months. The story begins with Ed’s early signs: leaving the bathroom water running, burning a pan, and subtle but unsettling changes that signal the start of his decline. Collier, already familiar with dementia from her father’s experience, takes on the caregiver role with love and determination. Her voice is personal and sincere, describing the daily realities of managing his health, emotions, and dignity.

Judy Collier’s voice is unvarnished, capturing both the exhaustion of caregiving and the quiet joy in shared rituals. Simple moments like offering watermelon slices, praying before lunch, and watching the sun outside the café take on deep meaning when seen through the slow fading of a loved one. The narrative never romanticizes the disease, but fiercely preserves the love at its center. The book is a valuable guide for others walking similar paths. Collier intersperses her story with practical appendices: communication tips, self-care suggestions, and resource lists for caregivers. These additions reflect not only her personal journey but a desire to help others find steadiness in times of uncertainty. Lunches with Ed honors both the beauty and the hardship of loving someone with dementia. It is about love expressed through action and presence and provides a helping hand to those navigating their own caregiving journeys. Collier captures both the rawness of grief and the grace that can live inside it, leaving readers with a quiet, enduring sense of hope.

In Lunches with Ed, a memoir by Judy Collier, her husband has been diagnosed with dementia. Ed had been a driver and was always very handy around the house. Judy had seen various changes in Ed, like increased forgetfulness, which sometimes caused Ed to lose his way back home. After an accident caused by Ed and a subsequent evaluation, Ed loses his driving license. This has a huge impact on him since driving was part of his identity. As Ed's symptoms progress, Judy is determined to be there for her husband despite the challenges. Judy puts Ed in a daycare facility, but this doesn't last as COVID-19 strikes. Later on, Judy settles Ed in a long-term care facility. The adjustment is hard, but it is for his own safety. Judy does window visits and FaceTimes Ed until the COVID-19 restrictions are lifted. Judy also arranges for Ed to see his children, who are now adults with their own children.

Lunches with Ed: A Dementia Journey of Love by Judy Collier is not only a story of hope but also of resilience as she takes care of her husband. Her firsthand experience provides a wealth of information on early signs and symptoms of dementia and what to expect as the disease progresses. The reader will also appreciate the tips provided at the end of the book, which give information on how to care for people with such conditions. This thought-provoking work got me thinking about the importance of the love of family and of multidisciplinary teams when taking care of patients. The flow of events was seamless, leaving no room for confusion, and the reader will also appreciate the easy-to-understand language used, which makes the work accessible to all audiences. This was an amazing read, and I look forward to reading something else by Judy Collier.

Lunches with Ed tells the emotional story of Judy Collier's life while she takes care of her husband, Ed, after his diagnosis with dementia. She recalls the heartbreaking early signs of memory loss, confusion, and behavioral changes in Ed and how these changes impacted their lives and daily routine. As Ed’s dementia begins to progress gradually, the author has to balance love, reflective moments, and the challenges she faces as his caregiver. Yet, she finds creative ways to keep their relationship joyful, like their shared love of music, working on puzzles together, and the power of prayer. When the COVID pandemic strikes, it makes Judy's role as Ed's caregiver more challenging, leading her to make some tough choices along the way. With tenderness and humor, this heartfelt memoir captures their incredible journey together.

Judy Collier's Lunches with Ed is both a moving love story and a valuable resource for others facing the realities of their loved one's diagnosis with dementia. Judy shares practical advice and reminds caregivers that self-care is also a crucial part of taking care of a loved one living with dementia. Her memoir is intimate, heartwarming, heartbreaking, and completely immersive. I love how real the author gets when reflecting on her profound experiences—both the good and bad—as Ed's caregiver. She doesn’t shy away from mentioning the fatigue, frustration, and grief she encountered throughout their journey. Yet, she maintained her grace and affection for Ed, showing how love and faith can help people through the most challenging moments of their lives. Overall, Lunches with Ed is a thoughtful book that will offer comfort and guidance to anyone on the same journey. I highly recommend it!
