Signs from Spirit by Sondra Sampson is a collection of journal entries and poems inspired by moments of otherworldly experiences. Being from the Lumbee tribe, the author shares profoundly personal connections with her father after he passed from this world to the next. But has he passed away? From significant blackbird sightings to coins left on his tombstone with relevant dates, Sampson offers a recorded trail of truths with her writings. Signs came to her when she needed them most. A jewelry box played a tune when closed, and the lights flickered when she asked for a sign of reassurance from her “daddy.” These writings will have you believing that life is infinite. Love never dies but takes a different form.

A visit from a red-tailed hawk outside my kitchen window on the morning of my sister's funeral was a clear sign for me. Now, years later, when I see one, two, or three soaring above me, I smile, because I feel closer to the ones that have moved on. I was touched by the vulnerability Sondra Sampson wrote about in Signs from Spirit. The poems and journal writings show the depth of her grief and the comfort she felt after receiving numerous signs from her father. Honestly, I had to pace myself so as not to read this book all in one sitting. But Sampson’s ethereal thoughts and graceful writing style made it difficult. I appreciate this book for its spiritual themes. I identified with this collection of work because I have experienced similar sensations. I recommend this book to all readers because it may open their minds and, more importantly, their souls to life after death and hope after grief.
