Sky Light Falls is a work of fiction in the Christian science fiction, fantasy, and action-adventure subgenres. It is suitable for readers of all ages from middle grade upward and was penned by author Donna E. Lane. The first book of the Whisperers trilogy, this adventure-packed novel follows Amadah, an exile living in the Second World and noticing the terrifying changes to its environment. As the planet crawls ever closer to destruction, Amadah sets out on a quest to discover why only to be captured and mislabeled as the responsible party for a giant meteor strike headed to the planet. Worse than this, a dark new power is on the rise, determined to harness the destructive power of the Second World in order to return and conquer the First.

I adored every moment of this superb series-opener, and author Donna E. Lane really proves that she knows how to craft every essential element of a sci-fi/fantasy tale. The world-building was superb, from the explanation of the different sentient species through to the social structures, beliefs, and lore of the different people present. The characters were well thought-out with distinctive voices and an emotive storyline, particularly for Amadah, that makes you feel really connected and invested in the fate of the world. The ending was so surprising that I had to leap straight into the second book immediately to find out where the plot would take me next. Overall, Sky Light Falls is an unmissable, exciting, and accomplished opening to a fantastic new series that I would highly recommend to fantasy readers everywhere.

Sky Light Falls by Donna E. Lane is book one of the Whisperers series. When disaster strikes, Amadah sets out for answers by leaving the safety of her clan to journey into forbidden lands. Twelve clans have lived in isolation, facing the recent disasters with little understanding until they discover that the current drastic changes to their surroundings are a planet-wide problem. To save her world, Amadah joins an unlikely alliance formed among the clans to embark on a journey with help from a young seer. Elsewhere, Skia Skotos has his agenda that began by dividing inhabitants, and now he plans to sacrifice this world in exchange for a return to the First World.

This beautifully written book by Donna E. Lane pulls you into this world with a stunning opening that introduces Amadah – an outsider among her people. Amadah is a tenacious character that is easy to identify with through her longing to explore more of the world and a desire to leave everything she knows behind for something new. She's curious and brave which is seen in her willingness to leave the comfort of home to see if she can find answers to the current situation. The story maneuvers through the perspectives of various characters that play a crucial role in the evolution of events as they discover their world is under threat of destruction and at the hands of a dark lord. Christian elements are subtly woven into the story and serve as part of the world's lore with the Great Love who traded his life to save all the world's species. Lane completely immerses you in this world with dialogue tailored to the setting and subtle details about each of the sentient clans that give you clever visuals such as mentioning tails and paws. Sky Light Falls has a poignancy in every scene thanks to Lane's lovely writing, complex characters, and Christian themes.

Donna E. Lane’s Sky Light Falls is the first book in the Whisperer’s Trilogy. Amadah, a Jasperi, had always lived in the woodlands. The leader of the Jasperi, Sani, called a meeting where Sonta reported the forest was shrinking. They brought Kindra, the child seer, to determine what was happening, but Amadah investigates beyond their borders. She enters the desert land and is captured by two Topazi. The lizard creatures take her to their camp and interrogate Amadah. They tell her that their clan takes and uses but does not share. Fearing they meant to eat her, Amadah attempts to escape. Fala chases her when suddenly they are thrown deep into the sand. The story shows how all the clans survive The Great Destruction.

Donna E. Lane provides a great character list preceding the story, which I found useful in understanding the supernatural beings that exist in the story. My attention never wavered from the plot filled with engaging dialogue and characters. The emotional pain each character felt is vividly depicted, and I could understand the hopeless feeling some of them felt. The cryptic words Kindra proclaims made everyone try to interpret their meaning, and I tried to decipher them as well. My favorite character was Fala, with his simple statements and fierce loyalty to prevent losing those he was bound to. I felt Amadah’s character wasn’t a perfect match to Fala, but it added to the fantasy of the story. Every region in the story is detailed and the transitions between every character are flawless. The Sky Light Falls will enchant anyone who enjoys a colorful fantasy story with multiple characters’ experiences.
