Sleeping Crimes, A Connie Anderson/Alan Bowering Mystery, is written by Joyce Slobogian. Connie Anderson is the co-owner of a mystery-themed bookstore in Brandon, a small Canadian town where she attended university ten years before that. For the last two years, she's been happily involved with police officer Alan Bowering in a close relationship that has not suffered from her occasional interest in sleuthing. Connie's perturbed to hear that a person from her past, Eric Delaney, is coming home to Brandon. Eric was Connie's beau until he left town without a word, leaving her heartbroken and pregnant. He went on to become a noted author of books that expose the secrets of the rich and famous. Eric has indicated to the press that he'll be stirring up some old and buried secrets in Brandon when he returns there for an honorary degree. When he's found murdered in his hotel room, Connie is already involved in this new mystery -- first as a suspect and then as a sleuth.

Joyce Slobogian's mystery is an enjoyable blend of police procedural and private investigation. Connie and her boyfriend are well-developed characters who keep the reader in on the action as they sift through clues and red herrings in search of the killer. The small town atmosphere, where everyone just about knows everyone else, is a treat. After reading a few chapters, you begin to feel that you know Brandon and its inhabitants well and become even more involved in the story. Sleeping Crimes is cozy and intelligent and is well worth reading.
