A Poem for When You Need It Most by Regan Noelle Smith reads like a personal journal meant to help you walk through the hardest, most painful seasons of your life. Regan skips past the easy platitudes to give you a look at the physical ways past trauma stays trapped inside us, showing up in a furrowed brow or an upset stomach. The pages offer comforting emotional prompts, using lovely ideas like clementine joy to celebrate small, happy daily moments and the chrysalis metaphor to show that resting in secret is actually okay. I found her creative style deeply moving, especially in the poem "It Will", where she writes a direct response to a painting, or when she uses the phrase "amalgam of emotion" to describe feeling pulled in a million directions. Her verses become raw when she describes the quiet room of a dying relative, showing how the sun still shines on ordinary chores like folding laundry, even during your deepest moments of loss. Her book is a true lifeline for anyone trying to sort through old memories and understand their own heart better.
A Poem for When You Need It Most by Regan Noelle Smith is a moving poetry collection that offers a lovely, gentle perspective on navigating grief without pretending that loss ever follows a simple, straightforward line. Something that really stayed with me is how Regan actually takes her writing into the real world by running workshops for women living in halfway houses. Her openness about the urge to escape through drugs and her sudden realization that the craving was just a twisted desire for spiritual surrender feels very eye-opening and genuine. The inclusion of her poem "Precious", which is a beautiful nod to Mary Oliver, gives wonderful guidance on slowing down a frantic lifestyle for comforting scripture reading and nature appreciation. Regan’s focus on letting go of artificial control shows a resilient spirit that relies on God even on the darkest days. By focusing on our shared human struggles and the beauty of creation, she shows readers how to find a pathway back to peace. This truly is a wonderful collection of poems, and I enjoyed reading every page.
