Slings and Arrows is a heartbreakingly realistic coming-of-age story by K.C. Sprayberry. Kelsey Worthman was about to become a high school graduate. Her grades were excellent and Kelsey was chosen to be the school Valedictorian. Her mother was the second oldest in her generation, and her loathing of her older brother caused her in turn to have the same animosity towards her firstborn. While walking home from the school's final game of the season, Kelsey was gang-raped by three drunk men just blocks away from her home. Reporting the rape to Allie Lindon, her only true friend, the horror of that night was kept secret until complications from the pregnancy ended in tragedy. Instead of receiving support from her mother, Kelsey was labeled a whore and kicked out of home. After graduation, she joined the US Air Force. Kelsey immediately bonded with her sponsor, Jimmy Marks. She was stationed in Germany and quickly learned true camaraderie and was regularly promoted due to her excellent leadership skills. Jimmy's six-year-old son Jaxon took a shine to Kelsey, who was soon appointed as his guardian. When Jimmy was killed, Kelsey raised Jaxon as her own to become a son any parent would be proud of.
It took some time for the tears to stop flowing after reading K.C. Sprayberry's tale. Slings and Arrows brought forth every emotion I thought possible from both the good and the bad in Kelsey's tumultuous life. Her successful pursuit of a career in the armed forces made me overjoyed. Seeing someone's world go from horrific to solid with just one decision came from the inner strength of the character herself. The plot was well constructed and I applaud the author’s literary talent in being able to make the reader relate to and empathize with the main character so easily. I look forward to reading many more of Sprayberry's work and wholeheartedly recommend this book to those over the age of 15. It teaches the reader how to find their true selves and that even with the odds stacked against you, continuing to reach for the stars will allow you to flourish.
